None other than Georg Friedrich Händel and Johann Sebastian Bach set off on a long journey to learn with him: Dietrich Buxtehude, organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. Both also applied - although ultimately in vain - for the succession of the respected and aged master. At the time, he was famous for his evening music. These large-scale church concerts took place with the participation of the musicians of the then leading Hamburg opera house and attracted thousands of visitors to the Hanseatic city every year. But Buxtehude also wrote works for small-scale chamber music, which show why he achieved such fame among his contemporaries: virtuoso and expressive they captivate the listeners.
