The French-style garden of the Detached house(Flag) of Vendôme was created from the start in 1667 by the duke de Vendôme, to whom current sequencing(order to pay) is owed. In the centre a circular pond where from flowerbeds(orchestras) with the axial and diagonal paths beam. The owner according to Jean-Baptiste Gauthier de la Molle, in 1682, decorated this garden of many sculptures and built four detached houses(flags) punctuating the angles of the garden. In the detached house(flag) East was installed(settled) a cave of freshness of which it stays no track today and that was transformed into chapel in the XIXth century. Between 1745 and the beginning of the XIXth century, different owners followed one another until 1817 date to whom(which) the Detached house(Flag) became girls' boarding school of the community of Sacré-cœur. To meet their needs, the garden was then transformed into kitchen garden and orchard. In 1906, Henry Dobler (painter, decorator, collector, poet) bought the Detached house(Flag). He(It) began(undertook) then to return all his(its) aristocratic chandelier(luster) both inside the building(ship) and in external arrangements(developments). He(It) obtained the classification(ranking) of the building(ship) in conformance with(for) Historic monuments in 1914\. He(It) created a second garden on the West (on the current site of the College of higher education of Art), taking as model the English-style garden, with pergolas, decorative ruins, that he(it) named(appointed) «the garden of the poets». He(It) made donation in the City of Aix-en-Provence of property and collections which he(it) had gathered(collected), on condition« that a Médicis school, a museum and a public garden» come into the world. In October, 1953, the garden was listed(classified) in conformance with(for) historic monuments. The museum opened its doors in July, 1954.
