About the location

Musée des Plans-Reliefs
129 rue de Grenelle 75007 PARIS
  • Paris
  • Île-de-France
Located in the Hôtel des Invalides on the 4th floor of the main courtyard, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs preserves and presents a unique collection in the world: historical models of fortified cities and their surrounding countryside. These were made between the reigns of Louis XIV and Napoleon III, on the same scale (1/600) and with the same techniques (wood, sand, silk, paper...). These models, tools of military strategy, have also been an attribute of the prestige of heads of state. Today, they are an irreplaceable documentary source on the sites they represent and a valuable educational tool. The models give a detailed three-dimensional representation of the cities, their buildings, their fortifications and the landscapes in which they fit. You will discover the face of Mont Saint-Michel at the time of Louis XIV or that of Bayonne at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
