About the location

Domaine départemental de Méréville
Rue Voltaire 91660 Méréville
  • Essonne
  • Île-de-France
An emblematic park of the Anglo-Chinese gardens, composed as early as 1784 by François-Joseph Bélanger and then Hubert Robert on behalf of the financier Jean-Joseph de Laborde, the Méréville estate is part of the development of the picturesque gardens of the late 18th century, the Enlightenment. It unveils this new aesthetic that crosses Europe, and marks the break with the regular gardens in vogue until this time. From the river, to the factories, to the rocks, composed like a picture articulated around scenes that one discovers along the walk, this exceptional garden tells the relationship of Man facing a sublimated Nature. Although his story damaged him, he managed to reach us without seeing the exceptional character of his composition disappear, where the patina of time mixed with the care of the gardener arouses a wide range of emotions.
