The exchange between Piers Faccini and Ballaké Sissoko began almost 20 years ago, when the two artists met at the same record company: Label Bleu. Immediately, a fascinating dialogue was created between the folk songwriter from London – passionate about African music – and the musician from Bamako – heir to the great tradition of the kora and Mandingo music. The most beautiful conversations sometimes take time. To go beyond clichés, it takes time. Contrary to the saying, music is not a universal thing, but rather a matter of languages. It takes time to learn the other's languages, not just to listen to them, but above all to hear them.
In 2020, finding themselves again on the same label, this time Nø Førmat, the exchanges are renewed. Ballaké Sissoko invites Piers Faccini to sing Kadidja, a song in Bambara, on his album Djourou. Then, Piers Faccini composes another song for the duo: The Fire Inside. The two friends then decide to record an entire album together, which is scheduled for release in early 2025. L’échange entre Piers Faccini et Ballaké Sissoko commence il y a bientôt 20 ans, quand les deux artistes se rencontrent au sein de la même maison de disque : Label Bleu. Tout de suite, un dialogue passionnant se crée entre le songwriter folk de Londres – passionné de musiques africaines – et le musicien de Bamako – héritier de la grande tradition de la kora et des musiques mandingues. Les plus belles conversations se font parfois lentement. Pour aller au-delà des clichés, il faut du temps. Contrairement au dicton, la musique n’est pas une chose universelle, mais plutôt une affaire de langues. Il faut du temps pour apprendre celles de l’autre, pour ne pas juste les écouter, mais les entendre surtout.
En 2020, se retrouvant de nouveau sur le même label, cette fois-ci Nø Førmat, les échanges se renouent. Ballaké Sissoko invite Piers Faccini à chanter Kadidja, une chanson en Bambara, sur son album Djourou. Puis dans la foulée Piers Faccini compose une autre chanson pour le duo : The Fire Inside. Les deux amis décident alors d’enregistrer, ensemble, un album entier dont la sortie est prévue début 2025.
