Who hasn’t dreamed of eternal youth? In The Makropulos Affair, the famous opera singer Emilia Marty is 337 years old but appears to be 30, thanks to a longevity elixir. As the effects of the potion begin to wear off, the diva becomes desperate to recover the formula that will allow her to maintain her dazzling youth. Thus begins a race against time, with death as the inevitable outcome.
Straddling science fiction and philosophical inquiry, the penultimate opera by Czech composer Leoš Janáček is a work of striking modernity. Premiered in 1926, its score stands out for its mastery of speech-song, harsh rhythmic patterns, and intense expressiveness. By invoking Hollywood mythology—from Marilyn to King Kong to Gloria Swanson—director Krzysztof Warlikowski offers a profound meditation on time and immortality.
