Horses and men – Galloping!
In the extension of the project «Des chevaux et des hommes» of the National Museum of Prehistory (MNP), the Micro-Flora Périgord Noir is associated with this route to propose a restitution project on the occasion of the European Night of Museums based on the collections of the digital museum.
A close collaboration has been established between a class of 6th year of the Pays de Belvès college in riding specialty, the MNP and the Micro-Fleet with the objective of questioning the representation of horses in art, from prehistory to the contemporary period.
Students were invited to discover and study a selection of works throughout the year in different structures:
- A workshop visit to the National Museum of Prehistory to observe in the permanent collections objects such as cuts and engravings on horse bones and we could engrave horses' heads on small clay blocks.
- A visit to the Cap Blanc shelter to discover the incredible horse carvings.
- A virtual 3D guided tour of the Lascaux cave to complete their knowledge on artistic representations of horses in prehistoric times.
- And finally, a visit to discover the evolution of representations of the horse in art through a selection of 20 works in the digital collections of theFolie Périgord Noir: from the jumping horse of Bruniquel to the monumental sculpture of Carosse by Xavier Veilhan.
At the end of these visits, they chose to interpret the monumental work of art of Carosse which represents on 15m long horses stylized in gallop by being inspired to create giant mobiles of horses folded in the way of origami. They also wanted to draw inspiration from the horses' wall representations by playing with games of shadows and lights to stage the mobiles and project their shadows on a support representing a cave wall.
A mediation will be designed to present the project to the public, in the manner of the Micro-conf' of the Micro-Flora Périgord Noir (short format of flash mediation) during the European Night of Museums.
