Le Château, 14000 Caen, France
The Museum of Fine Arts in Caen presents a vast panorama of European painting from the 15th to the 21st century. It holds one of the richest collections of provincial museums for the 16th and 17th centuries: Italian, French, Flemish and Dutch. The 18th century is represented through French and Italian portraitists and landscape painters, while the 19th century unfolds around romantic and realistic painters or even the landscape painters of Barbizon. Normandy as a place of inspiration is also present. The 20th century opens with French cubism while the contemporary period unfolds around major themes such as allegory, space and light. The prints cabinet contains one of the richest collections in Europe, the Mancel fund, which includes more than 50,000 prints presented as part of temporary exhibitions.
