Why should we save the universal?

Universalism, in the service of the most dubious causes, may have appeared as an instrument in the service of Western domination. But this is not all: we will distinguish between the claim to embody the universal and the idea that there is a universality we cannot renounce. To support this hypothesis, we will turn to anthropology and defend the thesis that the universal is an epistemic category, required by the nature of the human.

L’universalisme, au service des causes les plus douteuses, a pu apparaître comme un instrument au service de la domination de l’Occident. Il ne s’y réduit cependant pas : nous distinguerons la prétention à incarner l’universel de l’idée qu’il existe une universalité à laquelle il nous est impossible de renoncer. Pour étayer cette hypothèse, nous nous tournerons vers l’anthropologie et défendrons la thèse selon laquelle l’universel est une catégorie épistémique, requise par la nature de l’humain.
