The Instrumental Encounters are the resultof a collaboration between the Ateliers d'ethnomusicologie (ADEM) and the MEG. During this musical moment, musicians present their instruments an its repertoire.
The Silsila duo invites you to share an intense experience at the heart of which is firmly rooted the "Tree of Modes": a fascinating network of melodies and rhythms distinguished not only by their antiquity, but also by their ability to blossom in the present moment through the art of improvisation. Inspired both by the cosmic elements of nature and the microcosmic moods of medieval Arab medicine, this system unites music, poetry, philosophy and science, revealing a profound understanding of man beyond his material appearances. The 'ûd lute is one of its noblest servants. Its mythology associates it with the human body, its body taking the shape of a thigh, its neck of a shin and its pegbox of a foot; its strings - uruq - would be its veins and the openings in its soundboard - uyun - its eyes. Instrument of solitary meditation as well as of exchange, of learned music as well as popular, the 'ûd calls for dialogue: between artists and their audience, between earth and sky, between Man and himself...Father and son duo Marc and Thomas Loopuyt embody the concept of musical transmission so dear to Oriental tradition. SILSILA, which means "the chain" in Arabic, refers directly to a know-how that is passed down from master to disciple, from generation to generation. Over the course of his career, Marc Loopuyt has travelled the length and breadth of the Eastern musical world, from Andalusia to the Maghreb, from Azerbaijan to Turkey, with a particular fondness for masters such as Cinuçen Tanrekorur (Turkey) and Malik Mansurov (Azerbaijan). His son Thomas Loopuyt, born in Fez, has chosen to follow in his footsteps, naturally bringing his own sensibility to the table and exploring the popular Moroccan and Turkish fasel repertoires. In this way, the heritage is passed on, constantly renewing itself, crystallizing tradition in the present moment.
This Instrumental Encounter takes place within the framework of the ADEM anniversary entitled: 40 years of listening to the world (it will be celebrated by a festival to be held from September 17 to December 14, 2023.
