Ausstellung in Verbindung mit dem 50. Kongress der Internationalen Akademie für Keramik.

Backsteine, Dachziegel, Fliesen und Rohrleitungen sind allesamt Keramikelemente, die im Bauwesen häufig verwendet werden und in denen sich althergebrachte Fertigkeiten aus den verschiedensten Ländern vereinen. Ob in Genf entdeckt oder aus fernen Ländern mitgebracht, ob aus einem gallo-römischen Ofen oder in einer Fabrik des 20. Jahrhunderts geformt - Terrakotta-Elemente wurden lange Zeit nur wegen ihres dokumentarischen Wertes betrachtet. Ihre Untersuchung offenbart jedoch bedeutende technologische Innovationen, ausgedehnte Handelswege und die Existenz von Werkstätten, deren Produkte mit Stempeln oder Fingerzeichen markiert wurden. Einige Stücke verewigen sogar flüchtige Momente, wie den zufälligen Abdruck einer Hunde- oder Ziegenpfote in den noch frischen Ton. Die im Maison Tavel versammelte Architekturkeramik aus verschiedenen Epochen lässt sich unter einem funktionalen und ästhetischen Blickwinkel betrachten.

Bricks, tiles of all kind and pipes are all common ceramic elements used in construction that draw from diverse ancestral skills. Whether discovered in Geneva or brought back from faraway lands, whether fired in a Gallo-Roman kiln or cast in a twentieth century factory, terracotta elements have for a long time been considered for their documentary value. Yet studies reveal important technological innovations, vast trade circuits and the presence of workshops whose productions were marked by stamps or finger-made signatures. Certain pieces even immortalize fleeting moments, like the chance imprint of a dog’s paw or goat’s foot in the still soft clay. Brought together at the Maison Tavel, these architectural ceramics from different times are viewed from both a functional and aesthetic angle.

Briques, tuiles, carreaux, canalisations sont autant d’éléments céramiques d’usage courant dans la construction, qui mêlent des savoir-faire ancestraux issus de divers horizons. Découverts à Genève ou ramenés de pays lointains, sortis d’un four gallo-romain ou moulés dans une usine du XXe siècle, les éléments en terre cuite ont longtemps été considérés pour leur valeur documentaire. Leur étude révèle pourtant d’importantes innovations technologiques, de vastes circuits commerciaux et la présence d’ateliers dont les productions étaient marquées par des estampilles ou des signes tracés au doigt. Certaines pièces immortalisent même des instants fugaces, telle l’impression fortuite d’une patte de chien ou de chèvre dans l’argile encore fraîche. Réunies au cœur de la Maison Tavel, ces céramiques architecturales de différentes époques se découvrent sous un angle à la fois fonctionnel et esthétique.
