The advent of democracy in Spain and the construction of the Andalusian Autonomous Community marked a paradigm shift in the institutional management of flamenco in the aftermath of Francoism. From "Andalusian popular art" to "intangible cultural heritage of humanity", the construction and evolution of these different institutional categories since the 1980s have shown that the boundaries of flamenco can be modified according to regional and national political interests and circumstances.
