The UNIL and EPFL Scientific Instrument Collection: A History of Physics in Lausanne

Dr. Yohann Guffroy’s research focuses on the history of knowledge and technology, particularly on the visual representation of technical objects.
The historical scientific instruments jointly preserved by the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), some dating back to the 18th century, have only recently been brought together as a collection.
Indeed, it is only over the past twenty years, following major institutional changes, that the approximately one thousand objects comprising the collection have been “rediscovered” and gradually inventoried, appearing at first as a heterogeneous assemblage rather than a historically constituted whole.
This lecture will detail the process through which these objects were transformed into a collection by Jean-François Loude beginning in 2003, and will present the findings of a study into the long history of these scientific instruments.
To reconstruct the memory of the collection, numerous documents from the University archives have been examined, including correspondence, reports, invoices, inventories, and other records.
Exploring the history of the collection also makes it possible to trace the development of science in Lausanne—particularly physics—a field whose study has so far focused more on intellectual history than on material history.

Les recherches du Dr Yohann Guffroy portent sur l’histoire des savoirs et des techniques, notamment sur la mise en image des objets techniques.
Les instruments scientifiques historiques conservés conjointement par l’Université de Lausanne (UNIL) et l’École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), quoique remontant pour certains d’entre eux au XVIIIᵉ siècle, n’ont été constitués que récemment en collection.
En effet, ce n’est que depuis une vingtaine d’années, à la suite de changements institutionnels majeurs, que les quelque mille objets qui la composent ont été « redécouverts » et progressivement inventoriés, formant en apparence un agrégat hétéroclite plutôt qu’une totalité historiquement constituée.
Cette conférence propose de détailler le processus de « mise en collection » de ces objets par Jean-François Loude à partir de 2003, et de partager les résultats d’une enquête sur l’histoire longue de ces instruments scientifiques.
Pour retracer la mémoire de la collection, de nombreux documents des archives de l’Université ont été exhumés : correspondances, rapports, factures, inventaires, etc.
S’intéresser à l’histoire de la collection, c’est également reconstituer, en creux, le développement des sciences à Lausanne, en particulier celui de la physique, dont l’étude a jusqu’à présent privilégié l’histoire intellectuelle plutôt que l’histoire matérielle.
