American painters in France by Grégory Vroman
Rather than limiting itself to John Singer Sargent, at the heart of the exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay, this conference will also explore the journey of other American painters who studied or stayed in France between the end of the Civil War and the interwar period.
Mary Cassatt, James Whistler, Edward Hopper, but also Robert Henri, Alfred Maurer, Childe Hassam or Winslow Homer, were marked by their passage in France, whether by academic teaching, the discovery of the avant-garde or the influence of European masters.
It will be a question not only to understand the impact of this stay on their work, but also to show, particularly in the case of Mary Cassatt, how some of them played an essential role in the diffusion and promotion of French art in the United States.
Price: 5€ for members of the association Les Amis du LaM - 8€ for non-members, ticket sales on site the same day.

Les peintres américains en France par Grégory Vroman
Plutôt que de se limiter à John Singer Sargent, au coeur de l’exposition du Musée d’Orsay, cette conférence explorera également le parcours d’autres peintres américains ayant étudié ou séjourné en France entre la fin de la Guerre de Sécession et l’entre-deux-guerres.
Mary Cassatt, James Whistler, Edward Hopper, mais aussi Robert Henri, Alfred Maurer, Childe Hassam ou Winslow Homer, ont été marqués par leur passage en France, que ce soit par l’enseignement académique, la découverte des avant-gardes ou l’influence de maîtres européens.
Il s’agira non seulement de comprendre l’impact de ce séjour sur leur oeuvre, mais aussi de montrer, notamment dans le cas de Mary Cassatt, comment certains d’entre eux ont joué un rôle essentiel dans la diffusion et la promotion de l’art français aux États-Unis.
Tarif: 5€ pour les adhérents de l'association les Amis du LaM - 8€ pour les non-adhérents, vente des entrées sur place le jour même.

Amerikaanse schilders in Frankrijk door Grégory Vroman
In plaats van zich te beperken tot John Singer Sargent, in het hart van de tentoonstelling in het Musée d'Orsay, zal deze conferentie ook de reis verkennen van andere Amerikaanse schilders die in Frankrijk studeerden of verbleven tussen het einde van de Burgeroorlog en de interoorlogsperiode.
Mary Cassatt, James Whistler, Edward Hopper, maar ook Robert Henri, Alfred Maurer, Childe Hassam of Winslow Homer, werden gekenmerkt door hun passage in Frankrijk, hetzij door academisch onderwijs, de ontdekking van de avant-garde of de invloed van Europese meesters.
Het zal niet alleen een vraag zijn om de impact van dit verblijf op hun werk te begrijpen, maar ook om, met name in het geval van Mary Cassatt, te laten zien hoe sommigen van hen een essentiële rol speelden in de verspreiding en promotie van Franse kunst in de Verenigde Staten.
