Used by the peoples of northern Europe until around 1300, it was written using an alphabet composed of signs called runes. This runic writing was angular and formed of sticks, because it was more suitable for stone, wood or bone engraving. The runic alphabet is called the futhark, named after the first 6 letters of this system which includes 24. Each character notes a sound.
