How did the Arab world go from a coherent aesthetic called the “arts of Islam” to a much more secular aesthetic today? What are the cross-influences between the Arab and Western artistic spheres ? And how much for the universal and how much for the local? By answering these new questions and observing closely the formation of modern art in the Arab world in the 20th century, this new course puts Arab scenes back in the foreground while sketching a mirrored and open-plan history of art .

Mario Choueiry is a lecturer at the Institut du monde arabe and a specialist in contemporary art. He currently teaches modern art history at the Sorbonne Abu Dhabi and the Ecole du Louvre.
