Officers from every angle! De Gaulle among others (1909-1940)
Hidden and unknown to the public, the years of training and construction of the professional career of the future General de Gaulle were nevertheless decisive. The appeal of June 18 constitutes an act of rupture with the «caste» of the officers anchored in the respect of the hierarchy and in an ideal of apolitism. However, before 1940, Charles de Gaulle remained an officer among others. Charisma, bravery and «character» are traits commonly shared by many officers. But the officer corps is not uniform and this profession is little known.
What is an officer? Through this interrogation lies the other interest of this exhibition which presents what an officer is and does. Before commanding a unit, the officer must learn theoretical knowledge and learn to exercise authority. The test of fire becomes the indicator of one’s abilities, skills or shortcomings.
Refocusing Charles de Gaulle within his milieu makes it possible to highlight his singularities but also his conformity and thus restore the exceptionality of his political gesture on June 18, 1940.
