The IMA-Tourcoing exhibition presents a retrospective devoted to the work of Étienne Dinet, a painter with an extraordinary destiny! This exhibition will seek to solve a double mystery:
- How did the work of a French colonial painter become one of Algeria’s visual identities after independence?
"Why is Étienne Dinet one of the only Orientalist painters who escapes the reproach of exoticism and the trial done to the colonial gaze?" His painting is out of step with the orientalist painters who only attached themselves to the most gleaming aspects of a fake «Orient» that he denounces. Dinet is above all a realistic painter. The unity of his approach passes by his painting but also by his illustrations of works that will be presented in the exhibition. Étienne Dinet converted to Islam in 1913 under the name of Nasreddine and this personal turn completes from a spiritual and moral point of view his aesthetic choices. Étienne Dinet publicly protested against dramatically unfair social realities. He said he was “forced to live in the midst of this filthy colonial rot.” He played an important civic role with the French authorities during the Great War by hammering the elementary gratitude due to the indigenous Muslim soldiers. Étienne Dinet ended up occupying a prominent place in Algerian culture. The national historiography dissociates it from colonialism, going so far as to make it a figure of nascent nationalism, which it was not. This exhibition – the first dedicated to the artist since 1930 – brings together some 100 works. It aims to show the different aspects of Dinet, as well as his humanist personality, a great painter who is also a link and a bridge to reconcile memories.

L’IMA-Tourcoing présente une rétrospective consacrée à l’œuvre d’Étienne Dinet, peintre à la destinée hors du commun !
Cette exposition cherchera à résoudre un double mystère :
- Comment l’œuvre d’un peintre français d’époque coloniale est-elle devenue une des identités visuelles de l’Algérie après l'indépendance ?
- Pourquoi Étienne Dinet est un des seuls peintres orientalistes qui échappe au reproche d’exotisme et au procès fait au regard colonial ?
Sa peinture s’inscrit en décalage avec les peintres orientalistes qui ne s’attachaient qu’aux aspects les plus rutilants d’un « Orient » factice qu’il dénonce. Dinet est avant tout un peintre réaliste. L’unité de sa démarche passe par sa peinture mais également par ses illustrations d’ouvrages qui seront présentés dans l’exposition.
Étienne Dinet va se convertir à l’islam en 1913 sous le nom de Nasreddine et ce tournant personnel complète d’un point de vue spirituel et moral ses choix esthétiques. Étienne Dinet s’est insurgé publiquement contre des réalités sociales dramatiquement injustes. Il a dit être « forcé de vivre au milieu de cette immonde pourriture coloniale ». Il a joué auprès des autorités françaises un rôle civique important durant la Grande Guerre en martelant l’élémentaire gratitude due aux soldats musulmans indigènes.
Étienne Dinet a fini par occuper une place éminente dans la culture algérienne. L’historiographie nationale le dissocie du colonialisme allant jusqu’à faire de lui une figure du nationalisme naissant, ce qu’il ne fut pas.
Cette exposition – la première consacrée à l’artiste depuis 1930 – réunit une centaine d’œuvres. Elle a pour ambition de montrer les différents aspects de Dinet, ainsi que sa personnalité humaniste, un grand peintre qui est aussi un trait d’union et un pont pour réconcilier les mémoires.

de tentoonstelling IMA-Tourcoing presenteert een retrospectief gewijd aan het werk van Étienne Dinet, een schilder met een buitengewoon lot! Deze tentoonstelling zal een dubbel mysterie proberen op te lossen:
- Hoe is het werk van een Franse koloniale schilder na de onafhankelijkheid een van de visuele identiteiten van Algerije geworden?
"Waarom is Étienne Dinet een van de enige oriëntalistische schilders die ontsnapt aan het verwijt van exotiek en de rechtszaak tegen de koloniale blik?" Zijn schilderij is uit de pas met de oriëntalistische schilders die zich alleen maar vaststelden aan de meest glinsterende aspecten van een valse «Oriënt» die hij aan de kaak stelt. Dinet is bovenal een realistische schilder. De eenheid van zijn aanpak gaat langs zijn schilderij maar ook door zijn illustraties van werken die in de tentoonstelling zullen worden gepresenteerd. Étienne Dinet bekeerde zich in 1913 onder de naam Nasreddine tot de islam en deze persoonlijke wending completeert vanuit een spiritueel en moreel oogpunt zijn esthetische keuzes. Étienne Dinet protesteerde publiekelijk tegen dramatisch oneerlijke sociale realiteiten. Hij zei dat hij "gedwongen was te leven in het midden van deze smerige koloniale rotting." Hij speelde tijdens de grote Oorlog een belangrijke burgerrol met de Franse autoriteiten door te hameren op de elementaire dankbaarheid van de inheemse moslimsoldaten. Étienne Dinet bezette uiteindelijk een prominente plaats in de Algerijnse cultuur. De nationale geschiedschrijving distantieert het van het kolonialisme en gaat zo ver dat het een figuur van ontluikend nationalisme wordt, wat het niet was. Deze tentoonstelling – de eerste gewijd aan de kunstenaar sinds 1930 – brengt zo'n 100 werken samen. Het is bedoeld om de verschillende aspecten van Dinet te tonen, evenals zijn humanistische persoonlijkheid, een grote schilder die ook een schakel en een brug is om herinneringen te verzoenen.
