2020 | FRANCE | 1h28 Reality TV premiered at the 70th Berlinale in 2020. Shot both in Kinshasa and in Belgium, the film offers a reflection on the concept of ethnographic surrealism, which it applies to the practice, still widespread in Belgium, of «pagan rituals». The anchors are the preparations for a reality show on the Belgian carnival, financed and directed by three Congolese producers in need of an audience seeking to achieve a media stunt by exposing the collective madness of the former colonizers. Hawaly, the Burundian show runner is supposed to organize the shooting in Belgium, but her Belgian costume designer colleague seems very concerned about the supernatural. The film presents a complex landscape of customs, rites, dialects and languages, conjuring the supernatural and the fantastic: “At night, doesn’t rural Belgium, superstitious, with its dark stories, become the brightest place on the planet, the ideal landing ground for UFOs? If we are ever to develop new perspectives in Africa-Europe trade, we will need to formulate new proposals.” It is with this in mind that Lucile Desamory, Gustave Fundi and Glodie Mubikay intend to inaugurate a kind of telepathic channel between the two continents. They create a tunnel and open up other opportunities for engagement, a carnival of shared stories.
