This castle constitutes one of the major buildings of the Pays d'Auge. It was built from 1597 to 1602 by the architect François Gabriel (ancestor of the famous Gabriel lineage) for Guillaume de Hautemer, on an older mansion (whose only vestige is the dovecote). The development of a vegetable garden, the planting of apple trees and the modernization of the interior decoration took place in the 19th century (chimneys, woodwork, etc.). At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was acquired by Madame de Custine. Chateaubriand stayed there several times. Despite the modifications of the 19th century, the importance of the building was emphasized by Ruprich-Robert in 1925.
