It is the second year since the creation of our association in 1989 when we are going to take you on the coast(rib) Basque!
Royal city(estate), harbour city(estate), seaside station(resort), you are going to discover all facets of St. Jean-de-Luz to your rhythm, to the liking of your desires(envies).
Facing the Ocean, the city endowed with a superb bay(berry) was foreordained to be gained(won) by the society whirl born in Biarritz in 1850s. The seaside villas grew beside the wooden Basque houses painted, of shipowners' big houses and palaces of the XVIIIth century. He(It) gets free of this happy mixture of styles today exquisite one relaxed rhythm of life which is savoured in lazing about on the Big(Great) Beach(Range) or in strolls in the small port(bearing) of peach(fishing).
Across the visit of the city come discover the port(bearing) of peach(fishing) traditional and shipowners' houses of the XVIIth century and of the XVIIth century. You will be also enticed by the walk of the beach(range) and its charming houses with footbridge, witnesses(batons) of the rising(new) architecture of this seaside town appreciated(estimated) from the Belle Epoque.
The house Louis XIV: This noble private house, built for the shipowner Lohobiague (1643-1645), belongs to the same family always. Indoors, character " old Basque " is especially given by the staircase to flights(volleys) rights, strong work of carpenter of navy. Of the landing of the 2nd floor, an internal footbridge leads(drives) to apartments, where the widow of Lohobiague received Louis XIV in 1660. Of the gallery with arcades, take the time to savour the panorama of Basque Pyrenees.
The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste: Inside this church, three floors of galleries of oak frame(supervise) the unique(only) nave which covers a remarkable vault in panelled hull. The chorus(choir) very raised the height, closed by a beautiful railing(bar) of forged iron, carries a retable of the XVIIth century shining brightly with gold. Between columns and entablatures which order it in three registers, niches shelter a crowd of statues. It is in this church that got married Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse, on June 9th, 1660.
The House of the Infanta: thought Joanoenia, this rich house in brick and stone, with Italian-style galleries giving on the port(bearing), welcomed the infanta Marie-Thérèse d' Autriche and the queen mother. In the big(great) room the XVIIth century, admire the sculpted monumental fireplace and painted as well as of beams decorated with paintings(paints) of the school of Fontainebleau.
The Botanical gardens: At the edge of the coastal path, the botanical gardens Paul Jovet overhangs the ocean. Its visit is an invitation to journey across the landscapes of the Basque Coast(Rib). Original collections supplement this picture(board): useful plants, maze of the botanical families, plants of five continents... The discovery wide big(great) side! On the occasion of European Heritage Days, the entrance(entry) of the garden will be free. Take advantage of it!
[STOP_TRANSLATION]La rue Mazarin : Au centre du quartier de la Barre, une petite langue de terre où les armateurs édifièrent leurs demeures au XVIIe siècle protège le port des fureurs de l'Océan. Las, en 1749 survint un terrible raz-de-marée : 200 maisons furent anéanties et les deux tiers de la langue de terre engloutis. La rue Mazarin qui est l'axe de ce quartier conserve quelques riches demeures dont celle de Saint-Martin, au n° 13.
