The place and its history: an aqueduct dating from Roman times, emblem of the village
According to a study conducted in 1991, the aqueduct dates from Roman times for its oldest part. The use of bricks in making arches vaults has allowed to retain a construction date between 220 and 270 AD. The aqueduct bridge is the emblem of the village and one of the only rural aqueduct built during the ancient period still active in Europe. However, this work has been the subject of repairs throughout the centuries, extending the building to its current dimensions. Its origin and primary purpose are surrounded by mysteries. It could have been intended to supply a nearby Roman villa or an iron ore mine, to irrigate the valley or to feed the ancient village. The legend even says that the plans for this aqueduct were brought back from Babylon under Hugues Capet in 980, during the crusades.
