The parish church of Harfleur has a very ancient foundation, as indicated by its dedication to Saint Martin. In the 11th century, it was part of the benefit of the Abbey of Montivilliers. Taking advantage of the economic boom of the 13th and 14th centuries, a new church was built and blessed in 1411, but during the English occupation of the Hundred Years' War (1415 – 1450), the church suffered from fighting and vandalism. Peace returned, King Charles VII, wanting to thank the inhabitants for their loyalty, had the city rebuilt from its ruins, and ordered major works for the church, which remained unfinished. He completes the bell tower, lays the foundation for a choir and radiant chapels, and builds two large historiated and polychrome portals, to the west and north. But this expansion project on the land called "the new church" is slowed down after the foundation of Havre de Grâce which marks the decline of Harfleur.
