About the location

Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse-de-l'Enfant-Jésus et de la Sainte-Face

93 Rue de Croix, 59510 Hem, France

Nord

Hauts-de-France

This chapel was built from 1956 to 1958 at the instigation of Philippe Leclercq, patron of Roubaix textile, social catholic and art lover, on the plans of the Swiss architect Hermann Baur. In reinforced concrete and brick, it has mosaics and two walls of light designed by Alfred Manessier, the stained glass windows representing the life of Saint Thérèse being executed by the factory of Boussois (59), under the direction of the workshops of Louis Barillet de Paris. The sculpted elements are due to Eugène Dodeigne and the tapestry of the Sainte-Face, made by the master weaver Jacques Plasse-Le-Caisne, takes up, enlarged, a work of the painter Georges Rouault. The chapel and its bell tower, an example of post-war sacred art, were built in the orchard of a farm, they form a very coherent whole with the row of old houses of agricultural workers.
