Originally, the building is the chapel of the Capuchins, built around 1599 by Father Honoré, well known in Chaumont. Leaning against the convent, which will become the Michelet school, the chapel like the rest of the building will know a quite strange destiny. During the Revolution, the complex was emptied of its occupants, bought by the City, and became a store, then a prison, then a school in 1816\. The chapel, for its part, will house the "Société populaire" and its troupe of actors, to become from 1792 the municipal theater as known today.
"The chapel is emptied, and the construction of the theater begins in the original walls and roof. The current framework is that of the 17th century. This is not a unique case: many goods sold during the Revolution embraced new vocations. Initially, the theater had two levels of balconies," explains Anthony Koenig.
