Les Ferrère and their sculptural heritage: a baroque epic in the heart of the central Pyrenees
Come and discover or rediscover the Maison des Ferrère and the Pyrenean baroque on the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2023. This museum presents a permanent exhibition retracing the history of the baroque movement in the central Pyrenees through the exceptional work of a dynasty of bigourdans sculptors, the Ferrère.
From 1647 to 1808, the Ferrère family left its mark on the world of baroque sculpture. John I, his son Mark, as well as his grandsons John II and Dominic, form a true «dynasty» of carpenters-sculptors who created furniture of great wealth for the Pyrenean churches.
Settled in Asté, in the Campan valley, they carved the altarpieces and tabernacles of many churches in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
No fewer than 59 churches have been embellished by these local artists, with twisted columns, cherubs and decorative motifs finely carved in wood and decorated with delicate gilding in fine gold. Among the most famous achievements are those of Asté, Beaudéan, Campan, Pouzac, Gerde, Orignac and Antist.
