Meetings in tribute to Laurent Danchin by PiF on singular art environments: Jo Farb Hernandez/ Matthieu Morin
France’s irregular heritage is closely linked to the intellectual heritage of Laurent Danchin. Its ambition was to launch a global movement to safeguard the heritage of contemporary popular art, including the preservation project of the Preludian Art Village of Chomo. Networking, making creations and irregular practices visible, sharing backup solutions, and pursuing research through meetings and symposia are for PiF founding elements of its approach. This series of meetings was born to pay tribute to Laurent Danchin and to continue the explorations on extraordinary art environments in the company of specialists in the sector.
On this second day of meetings we are pleased to welcome:
Jo Farb Hernández, is an award-winning folklorist, curator and writer based in Watsonville, California and Catalonia, Spain. Professor emeritus at San José State University, she is also director emeritus of SPACES, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving artistic environments and self-taught arts. She received a Fulbright scholarship in 2008 to research artistic environments in Spain. His book Singular Spaces, published in 2013, is considered a reference in the field. Singular Spaces II, published in 2023, continues its exploration of Spanish artistic environments, testifying to its militant commitment to the recognition of outsider art in situ.
Matthieu Morin begins in 2011 a long road trip on American roads to find monumental works of art brut. In his book "Des pépites dans le goudron", reissued in 2024 by Knock Outsider, Matthieu recreates this travel experience and leads us from one site to another. He also recounts his journey through texts and images, offering a real dive into American popular culture and allowing to anchor the creations in their geographical and social context.
