Before the defensive post of the royal Capetian domain, facing the Duchy of Normandy, the fortified complex was erected in the twelfth century by Hugh II of Châteauneuf, lord of the Thymerais. The originality of the construction lies in its keep-gate in flint and grison stone, placed at the entrance of the castral ensemble to control the arrivals.
