About the location

Théâtre de Tarascon
2 rue Eugène Pelletan, 13150 Tarascon
  • Bouches-du-Rhône
  • Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
The theatre of Tarascon was built in the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, remnant of the former convent of the Dominicans. Established near the Saint John Gate from 1360, the Brothers of the Order of Saint Dominic built a conventual complex, whose church was consecrated in 1499\. Sold during the French Revolution in 1791, the buildings were partly destroyed or reused in barns. The City of Tarascon bought a part of it in 1825 in order to set up a performance hall. It was destroyed by fire in 1884 and replaced by the present theatre in the years 1885-1900\. The Tarascon Theatre has been protected as a historical monument since 1980.
