Dans les yeux de Flow

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the visit of the Citadel will be free on Sunday 17 September only, at the usual opening hours (9h – 18h without interruption). Two guided tours will be offered, at 10am and 3:30pm, commented by Sylvie Normand and Floriane Auda. They will conclude with a demonstration of the operation of the drawbridge in «Zig-zag», recently restored by the association ATM. This work has been the subject of real technical prowess such as hot riveting used for the Eiffel Tower or hammering with fire. For a fun approach to drawbridges, a game booklet will be available. During the open house, the public will watch André Roman’s film “Citadelle! Ship of Men…” , projected every half hour in the old powder shop which evokes, with poetry, the fortress exceptional both by its architecture and by the quality of its restoration. In the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Château, visitors will admire the magnificent stained glass windows of master glassmaker Claude Courageous and enjoy the bookshop. Facing north, they will be able to learn about the sports and fun practices offered by the sports clubs TRACS and Perce Roche, venture into the underground staircase, with its 258 steps carved into the rock and discover the Théâtre de verdure which welcomes, every summer, the festival of the Nights of the Citadel. Finally, in the Powder Magazine, the only realization of the ambitious project designed by Vauban for the Citadel of Sisteron, the exhibition «Vauban and his predecessors», invites to an exciting journey on the fortification in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. And let’s not forget, of course, that the Citadel offers one of the most beautiful views of Haute Provence!

Between Provence and Dauphiné, overlooking the cluster where the Durance flows, the Citadel of Sisteron bars the sky, crown the city with its walls, its bastions, its keep. The view is breathtaking, over 150 km, it offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints of Haute Provence. A listed historic monument covering 10 hectares, it bears eight centuries of architecture and history. Keep and walkways, built on the narrow rocky spine, date from the 12th century, the layering of bastioned walls from the 16th century. Of the Vauban project, designed in 1692, only the powder magazine was built.
Major changes were made to the north face in the mid-19th century. It was at this time that was dug into the rock, the magnificent underground staircase connecting the fortress to the city.
Deeply damaged by the bombing of August 1944, the Citadel is now beautifully restored. In 1960, the association Arts, Theatre, Monuments (ATM) was created. It has since ensured the preservation of the monument, its en
