Guided tour of the Citadel of Sisteron
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the visit of the Citadel will be free on Sunday 17 September only, at the usual opening hours (9h – 18h without interruption). Two guided tours will be offered, at 10am and 3:30pm, commented by Sylvie Normand and Floriane Auda. They will conclude with a demonstration of the operation of the drawbridge in «Zig-zag», recently restored by the association ATM. This work has been the subject of real technical prowess such as hot riveting used for the Eiffel Tower or hammering with fire. For a fun approach to drawbridges, a game booklet will be available. During the open house, the public will watch André Roman’s film “Citadelle! Ship of Men…” , projected every half hour in the old powder shop which evokes, with poetry, the fortress exceptional both by its architecture and by the quality of its restoration. In the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Château, visitors will admire the magnificent stained glass windows of master glassmaker Claude Courageous and enjoy the bookshop. Facing north, they will be able to learn about the sports and fun practices offered by the sports clubs TRACS and Perce Roche, venture into the underground staircase, with its 258 steps carved into the rock and discover the Théâtre de verdure which welcomes, every summer, the festival of the Nights of the Citadel. Finally, in the Powder Magazine, the only realization of the ambitious project designed by Vauban for the Citadel of Sisteron, the exhibition «Vauban and his predecessors», invites to an exciting journey on the fortification in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. And let’s not forget, of course, that the Citadel offers one of the most beautiful views of Haute Provence!
