Citadel started in 1583, partly destroyed, then rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century. Vauban makes some modifications (relief plan dated 1716). In the 18th century, construction of a chapel larger than the previous one. In 1918, the citadel abandoned the military domain for the private domain of the State. In 1958, inauguration of the naval museum. Citadel acquired by the municipality in 1992.
