The Marais du Vigueirat is a protected natural site of 1,200 hectares at the junction of two remarkable ecosystems: the Rhone Delta and the Steppic plain of the Crau, and is one of the most remarkable properties of the Conservatoire du Littoral in the Camargue. A wide variety of flora and fauna can be found here, with a mosaic of natural wetlands, and more than 2,000 animal and plant species are recorded, with more than 300 bird species observed, including all European heron species, and up to 35,000 ducks in winter. 5 herds of bulls and horses of the Camargue breed graze year-round on the estate. The natural heritage of the Marais du Vigueirat is recognized nationally and internationally, benefiting from a classification as a National Nature Reserve, and constitutes a central area of the Camargue Biosphere Reserve. Access
Access to Arles: - By TGV Paris-Arles (3 h 44); - By bus from Avignon, or by shuttle from Marseille-Marignane airport; then by road, take the D35 towards Port-Saint-Louis du Rhône for 20 kilometers to reach Mas-Thibert. - By car --> From Nîmes/Arles on the A 54 motorway: take the expressway towards Fos-sur-Mer, then 20 km from Arles turn right towards Mas-Thibert. --> From Aix-en-Provence/Salon on the A 54 motorway: exit ZI St-Martin de Crau (2nd exit after the toll of Saint-Martin de Crau), then follow direction Mas-Thibert (D 24). --> From Marseille/Fos-sur Mer: take the direction Arles (N 568), and after the long straight line of the crossing of the Crau, turn left on Mas-Thibert. From Mas-Thibert, the circuit is signposted. A 2 km track takes you to the reception area.
