Designed to host shows of human and animal fighting, the amphitheatre is a major building of the Roman city. Around the central arena, bleachers with an elliptical plane allowed all the inhabitants of Forum Iulii to share a common cultural experience. Built at the beginning of the 2nd century, its extra-muros location near the Gaul gate makes it a symbol of the power of the colony. However, the remains still visible today are the result of centuries of use and reuse of materials to build the medieval and modern city. Between 2008 and 2012, the amphitheatre of Fréjus was the subject of a conservation and enhancement project as part of the Plan Patrimoine Antique.
