About the location

Château de l'Etenduère
Rue de l'Etenduère

  • Pays de la Loire
Qualified as «accommodation» in 1375, then «noble hotel» in 1484, it was in 1622 that permission was obtained to build a castle. In the 18th century, according to its owner, major works made it one of the most beautiful castles in the country, surrounded by a large estate. On January 31, 1794, during the Vendée Wars, the castle was destroyed during the passage of the infernal columns. Abandoned, the ruins served as a stone quarry. The surviving elements, including two facades, the platform and its access bridge, make it possible to imagine the beauty of the old castle. Until the end of the 18th century, the family of Herbiers de L'Etenduère owned the castle. Its most illustrious member is Admiral Henri-François des Herbiers de L'Etenduère; he carries the title of Marquis de L'Etenduère but it is his older brother who inherits the estate. An experienced navigator, he became commander-in-chief of the Royal Navy at Rochefort.
