Château du rocher
Château du Rocher, 53600 Mézangers
Built mainly in the second half of the fifteenth century on a site already occupied in the thirteenth century, the castle of the Rock then undergoes important modifications in its appearance, by the veneer of a Renaissance facade on its west wing (1510-1535) and the addition of an 18th-century building at its eastern end (1728). In this juxtaposition of styles, there are two strong points: the 15th century facades which still combine defensive structures with a refined but sober Gothic aesthetic and the impressive Renaissance gallery with a complex and exuberant composition, witness to the inventiveness of the Renaissance and the architectural and decorative upheaval it brought.
