About the location

Château de la Guignardière
Route des Sables d'Olonne, 85440 Avrillé
  • Vendée
  • Pays de la Loire
Renaissance castle fully furnished in a park of 86ha with ponds, shady alleys and animals. The construction of the castle, undertaken around 1560 by a close associate of the Court withdrawn in the province, was interrupted before completion 20 years later and will be resumed for only one span in 1773\. The current building is therefore truncated by half of its original plan, in U with raised one-storey corner pavilions; it is however one of the rare examples of Renaissance architecture in Bas-Poitou. The uniformity of the elements used, the balance between the horizontal and vertical lines very equally emphasized by nature, the absence of ornamentation other than architectural make it an austere architecture close to the Parisian realizations of the moment.
