Département de la Vendée

On the sidelines of the rise of cinema from 1895, the idea of making its practice accessible to as many people as possible spread. The marketing of specific films and materials supports this phenomenon. The Vendée Archives holds more than 153 audiovisual collections (entrusted by deposit or donation) that attest to this enthusiasm for amateur cinema. To date, nearly 600 films (more than 70 hours of digitized images) are available online on the Archives website. During the European Heritage Days, discover the cameras and projectors used by 20th century filmmakers, and try to place the different image formats on a timeline!

The French Revolution founded the public archives and set out the principle of citizens' free access to documents. From the outset, citizens have been at the heart of the archives' mission. This is still true 230 years later, in a society where access to law, knowledge and culture is a central value and is aligned with the principles of administrative transparency and democratic accountability.
