Located around a modest house dating from the early 17th century, this garden was created from scratch from 1987 by the owner of the place, William Christie. It was inspired by Italian and French baroque Mannerist gardens. The boxwood beds, the hedges of ifs and charms, the meshes of lime trees succeed one another on the terrace and form an architecture as learned as seductive. The visitor will notice a small cloister planted with yew and roses and a small green theater in "chinoiseries"; he will also find carved boxwood embroidery, a rustic pergola and a rose garden. A mirror of water surrounded by plane trees completes the whole."

About the location

Le Jardin de William Christie
32 rue du Bâtiment 85210 Thiré
  • Vendée
  • Pays de la Loire
In 1985, William Christie fell in love with an estate in Thiré, Vendée, where he set out to create a garden. Since then, it is not a single garden, but a succession of spaces as remarkable as eclectic as he imagined over the years, in a process of permanent creation and inspired by the art of gardens as it reached its peak in France and Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today recognized as a "Remarkable Garden" and listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments, this exceptional 12-hectare site is at the heart of the project of the Fondation Les Arts Florissants - William Christie.
