The abbey of Benedictines was founded in the 10th century under the name of Saint-Loup, then under that of Saint-Martin, on the remains of a Roman villa.
The abbey of Cendras is mentioned in 1020, it is attached to the bishop of Nîmes, it brought together eighty monks and some one hundred and fifty brothers. In 1366, Pope Urban V attached it to Saint Victor of Marseilles, then to the seigneury of Cendras and then to the barons of the Fare in 1576.
