Built by Cardinal Arnaud de Via next to his palace, and classified as a Historic Monument in 1862, the Notre-Dame collegiate church is dedicated to worship but sometimes hosts choral and orchestral performances. Its cloister leans against its northern flank and offers a privileged setting for cultural events such as exhibitions, theatre shows and music.

About the location

Collégiale Notre-Dame
Place Meissonnier, 30400 Villeneuve-lès-Avignon

  • Occitanie
Southern Gothic church built in the 14th century by Cardinal Arnaud de Via, nephew of Pope John XXII. It was the chapel of a monastery of canons founded by the cardinal in the fourteenth century. The cloister, leaning against the north side, served the other buildings of the monastery. This monastery was abolished by the Revolution, and the Collegiate Church became the seat of the parish of Villeneuve, which it still is today.
It houses many works of art, the burning tomb of the Cardinal de Via, as well as the copy of the famous Pietà de Villeneuve, whose original is in the Louvre Museum.
