The hospital originated in the merger of the Sainte-Marie de la Daurade hospital and the Novel hospital in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, united under the name of Saint-Jacques du bout-du-Pont Hospital in the fourteenth century. His primary vocation was to welcome the poor, the sick and pilgrims who crossed the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela. After centuries of care, the last hospitalization services were transferred to other facilities in the city in 1987. By inscribing the Camino de Santiago de Compostela as a World Heritage Site in 1998, UNESCO chose the Hotel-Dieu Saint-Jacques to illustrate the extent, diversity and vitality of this heritage. In the company of its neighbor, the Saint-Joseph de La Grave Hospital, it represents a real place of memory of the public hospital and one of the most prestigious historical heritage of Toulouse. The public has the opportunity to visit, free or guided, the large heritage rooms of the hospital, such as the Pilgrims' Room, the Columns Room, the Gaspard Room of Maniban, the chapel and the operating room of the 1960s. NEW 2023: Opening of the pile of the old covered bridge of the Daurade, newly restored, offering a real terrace overlooking the Garonne!

The Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques, administrative seat of the University Hospital of Toulouse, is an architectural complex built on the banks of the Garonne river inherited from several centuries. Born of the Hôpital Sainte-Marie de la Daurade and the Hôpital Novel in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, both united under the name of "Hôpital Saint-Jacques du bout du Pont" in the fourteenth century, it was intended to welcome the poor, the sick and the pilgrims who crossed the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela. Together with its neighbour the Saint-Joseph de La Grave Hospital, it constitutes the «place of memory» of the Public Hospital and represents one of the most prestigious historical heritage of Toulouse. At the end of these centuries devoted to health care, the Hôtel-Dieu saw the last hospital services go to the other institutions of the city in 1987\. By inscribing the Ways of Santiago de Compostela as a World Heritage Site in 1998, UNESCO has selected the Hotel-Dieu Saint-Jacques
