Built by Bordeaux architect Jean-Jules Mondet, the Saint-Baudile church is part of the revival of Gothic art, which was considered «national architecture» by the Romantic movement. This artistic movement is inspired by the great French cathedrals of the 12th and 13th centuries. The church is dedicated to Saint Baudile, a martyr born in the third century and the patron saint of the city.
