About the location

Grande fontaine
Square Joseph Thome, 30200 Bagnols-sur-Cèze
  • Gard
  • Occitanie
In the heart of Bagnols, in the middle of Square Joseph-Thome, just behind the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, there is a small circular hatch, duly protected by a wrought iron mesh. A few meters below it lies the large fountain of Bagnols. Once the hatch is opened, a ladder leads to the source, whose crystal-clear waters come from a resurgence located on a fault: a basin of about 100 m2 whose depth can reach up to 1.40 m.
This inexhaustible source allowed the installation of the first stands in the ninth century in Bagnols-sur-Cèze. The City bears its name: Bagnols from the Latin seaside resort, a place where baths are taken. For several centuries, the Bagnolais have drawn this water to irrigate, water and meet their domestic, artisanal and agricultural needs.
From the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century, the basin of the large fountain was open-air. In 1892, for reasons of hygiene and hygiene, the patron Joseph Thome financed the work to cover the source.
