Were Roman citizens great sportsmen? The comparison with Greece leads to give a negative answer and it is wrong because in reality they have done a lot of sport as shown by various ancient sources. On the other hand, everyone knows that the Romans were passionate about the spectacle of circus games and chariot races in particular. However, the mode of organization of these, and the status of the stars that were the coaches of quadriges evoke our current football and sport-business. Attend a lecture by Jean-Paul Thuillier, professor emeritus of the École normale supérieure (Paris), author of several books on ancient sport.
