A document of 1729 traces the Abbey of Rivet to the time of Charlemagne. It was probably a Benedictine monastery.
This monastery was affiliated to the Cistercian Order in 1189, by the Abbey of Ponteaux, itself of the filiation of Pontigny. In 1264, a Bull of Pope Urban IV took the Rivet under its protection and exempted it from the jurisdiction of the bishop of Bazas. The King of England, Henry III Plantagenet, undertook to protect him. The church dates from this period with its walls more than a metre thick.
On April 22, 1288, the King of England, Edward I granted an annual annuity to the monastery. It was erected as an abbey in 1408\. After the Hundred Years War, which was terrible in the region, the abbey was reduced to five religious in 1478\. In the 17th century, several abbots of Rivet restored both the convent life and the buildings. In 1702, Louis XIV appointed an abbot as commendator. At that time there was only one monk left.
