The chapel of Calvary dates from the 17th century and the cemetery from the 18th century.
The Confrérie Sainte-Croix des Pénitents Noirs de Guéret was confirmed on September 6, 1673 by the bishop of Limoges, François de Lafayette. The Black Penitents had to to visit the prisoners and the poor to meet their needs, to help the poor orphaned girls to marry and the children to learn some trade or art to earn a living, to visit the sick confreres, to bury the poor dead, who will have left no property to help them at their funeral and have God pray for them after their death.”
More than a century later, on May 12, 1783, Louis Charles du Plessis d'Argentré Bishop of Limoges authorized the Brotherhood to build its cemetery around their Chapel of the Crucifix on land belonging to them and another boundary donated by Sieur Antoine-François-Sylvain Coudert lord of Sardent.
