Château de Varaignes
Le bourg, 24360 Varaignes
- Dordogne
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The castle of Varaignes, built between the twelfth and the sixteenth century, is a concentrate of styles: from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. In 1928, his story was turned upside down. Indeed, his door, dating from the Renaissance, was bought by John Hays Hammond Jr., a rich American and inventor of the remote control. He wanted to build a castle for his wife, north of Boston, with elements and objects purchased in France and Italy.
To arrive safely, the door was dismantled in 47 pieces and reassembled on a facade of the inner courtyard surrounding the pool of the Hammond property. The «travel door» was forgotten for several decades, until it reappeared thanks to an American search engine.
Located 20 km away, La Rochefoucauld Castle is listed as a Historical Monument.
