Saturday, September 16, 2023, for the 40th European Heritage Days, the city of Sarlat la Canéda invites you to celebrate the theme of sport. This is a current theme as France will host the Olympic Games in 2024.
This evening mixing culture and sport is an opportunity to remind the interest to value and preserve this historical heritage.
Sarlat is indeed a sports town. It is the city of rugby par excellence, the place where the Barbarians were born. The CAS, winner this year of the French championship, is faithful to this tradition. Other famous sports personalities are also from home, such as the 1969 Olympic champion Nicole Duclos.
The municipal teams propose this year to discover the sporting heritage of the city through a historical, cultural program through exhibitions of loan archives of associations and individuals. You can also attend demonstrations or sporting events such as fencing or a clown specatcle and even participate.
Coming in sportswear is advisable!

The history of Sarlat would begin in the ninth century with the foundation of a Benedictine abbey. However, its existence is not attested until the twelfth century in the Life of Saint Sacerdos.
But many archaeological sources suggest that the site was inhabited long before, from the Paleolithic period. Similarly, Gallo-Roman remains testify to the presence of population before the Middle Ages.
