About the location

Abbaye de Vertheuil

Discover this abbey site classified as Historical Monuments. The abbey church, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, is a fine example of Romanesque art, influenced by Saintonge and Poitou: ambulatory, octagonal bell tower, high-quality carved decoration. The abbey, founded in the 11th century by William VIII of Aquitaine, housed in the 12th century a community subject to the order of Saint Augustine. Several times devastated (Hundred Years War, Wars of Religion), it was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and sold in 1792 as a national property. The site hosts several summer exhibitions of various works.
