The Rouffignac cave is one of the largest caves decorated by artists of prehistoric times. About 17,000 years ago, the Magdalenians created about 250 animal figures, most of them mammoths accompanied by bison, horses, ibex and woolly rhinos. The black drawings of the Great Ceiling are an exceptional collection of Palaeolithic art.
Before the Men, the cave was occupied by bears who, for millennia, hibernated in this protective place. The bauges they dug in the clay of the soil and the innumerable Griffades that mark the walls testify to this episode of the site’s history.
It is on an electric train that today the guided tour that leads the public up to 1 km from the entrance.
